The Carapana

Colombian Amazon — an indigenous community partnering with Dulce Amazónica

The Carapana, also written Karapanã, are an Indigenous people associated with the Vaupés region and the Eastern Tukanoan cultural landscape. Their communities are connected to rivers, gardens, fishing, hunting, oral traditions, craftwork, and sacred knowledge.

Like many peoples of the Vaupés, the Carapana are part of a wider system of relationships among neighboring groups. Language, marriage, ceremony, and territory help organize social life. Their cultural world is deeply connected to the health of rivers, forests, animals, and sacred places.

Carapana identity depends on the transmission of knowledge from elders to younger generations. This includes practical skills, stories, social rules, and ecological understanding.

For Dulce Amazónica, the Carapana help reinforce the importance of naming each people correctly. The Amazon is not one culture. It is a living network of nations, each with its own memory, language, and dignity.
